Woman must have her freedom - the fundamental freedom of choosing whether or not she shall be a mother and how many children she have. Regardless of what man's attitude may be, that problem is hers - and before it can be his, it is hers alone. She goes through the vale of death alone each time a baby is born. As it is the right neither of man nor the state to coerce her into ordeal, so it is her right to decide whether she will endure it.

Contraceptives

The availability of safe modern contraceptives has enabled women to avoid having an unwanted pregnancy, and couples to space their children. Spacing children to intervals of 2 or more years, improves a woman's health. Contraceptive choices now available permit the woman, or the couple, to choose the most appropriate contraceptive for their particular circumstances. Before choosing a particular contraceptive most people want to know its effectiveness against pregnancy, its safety and the side effects associated with its use. Read more about choosing Birth Control.
A method for evaluating the effectiveness of the various contraceptive methods is the Pearl Index, which calculates the unintended pregnancy rate from the formula below:

                    The number of intended pregnancies
                  --------------------------------------------------- x   1200
Total months of exposure to pregnancy

The result is expressed as the failure rate per 100 woman years. Some women find it embarrassing to consult a medical practitioner (especially if it is a male) about contraception. But a sensitive doctor will do everything possible to diminish that embarrassment. The doctor will take a general history, a menstrual history and a sexual history in a non-judgmental way. With this information, the doctor will be better able to help the woman decide which method of contraception she would prefer it most cases. Although some doctors may not have the time to spend going through the whole range of options with you and just give you the common used methods.

SEATTLE - Health officials are in the process of contacting up to 200 women to warn them about birth control shots administered through the Seattle-King County Health Department.

King County Public Health says there might be a problem with the generic version of the Depo Provera shots given at the Renton clinic after two women got pregnant.

The Health Department is calling or sending the letters to women who received shots at their ten Seattle-King County Public Health clinics.

Out of precaution, they will no longer administer those shots and they want women to come in for pregnancy tests.
